Vase, Bouquet , from the Danish ceramicist Birgitte Munck. Birgitte's modern ceramics are rooted in Nordic and Japanese aesthetics. She specializes in stoneware for indoor use – designed both for functional purposes and as decoration.
Birgitte Munck's interest in ceramics began early when she was a student of the Danish ceramist Inger Rokkjær. Her training was a great source of inspiration and set her on a lifelong journey of working in ceramics.
She uses various techniques including turning, modeling and carving. Often of a domestic scale, the turned works are often cut, faceted and altered while still leather-hard to create calm forms and tactile surface textures.
Birgitte mostly works with red stoneware clay, which is fired to a rich, dark brown color with iron splinters that emerge through the glaze. She also works with coarser and lighter stoneware clays to achieve beautiful, bright glazes. She established her workshop in Denmark in 2011, where she works, designs and occasionally teaches ceramics.
In 2020 she moved to Reykjavik, Iceland, where she continues her artistic ceramic journey, heavily inspired by Iceland's earth colors: lava, moss, glacial lagoons and geothermal areas. She is the co-founder of Reykjavik Clay, Iceland's first open ceramics studio, which opened in 2023. After a lifelong journey in ceramics, inspired by Nordic and Japanese aesthetics as well as her time in the aid sector, she established the studio to make ceramics accessible to everyone - both as hobby and career path.
