The Louisiana plaid is inspired by Louisiana's architecture; specifically the outer wall at Louisiana's cafe area. The wall, where the bricks intersect at an angle of 30 degrees, and which gives the wall a unique expression and makes the building and nature come together. The graphic pattern is reproduced on the Louisiana plaid. On one side in black on a white background and on the other side in white, on a black background.
The plaid is made in collaboration with Klippan Yllefabrik, which is known for weaving quality plaids. The Louisiana plaid is woven in 100% cotton and is wonderfully soft.
The architects Jørgen Bo and Vilhelm Wohlert collaborated with Louisiana's founder, Knud W. Jensen, on the museum's extensions, which were constructed in the years 1956-58. The vision and philosophy that guided the architects was to create a connection between the old villa and the extensions by taking into account and integrating nature and the surroundings in a way that would make the museum fit in with the surroundings in a harmonious and natural way.
The long wall at the terrace dissolves into a pattern of protruding bricks and consists of two sections facing differently. The standard measurement for the angled wall was extended and used to determine the location of the facing stones that project from the wall. The faceted pattern is the result of two sets of bricks intersecting at an angle of 30 degrees. The architecture means that the wall is as much a part of the landscape as the trees and the fern-filled gorge.
The reason for this is the three-dimensional composition of the bricks, which stretches out, shapes the space and becomes part of the surroundings. As the daylight slides across the facade of the wall, the sun creates an alternating pattern of shadows that varies with the viewing angle.
One notices the wall because of the faceted surface and the same relationship between place and material is repeated in the brick walls that extend on the other side of the passages as well as the other elements that frame this part of the building.
The elements of the building make the natural space tangible, give it dimension, texture and pattern, and in this way become part of the natural environment.
