Exhibition poster with the work, Ein Antlitz auch des Leibes - A face also of the body , (1939), by the Swiss artist, Paul Klee, (1879-1940) from the Louisiana exhibition, Klee & Cobra, in 2012. The exhibition explored for the first time the relationship between the Cobra movement ( 1948-51) and Klee works and artistic thinking. For artists such as Asger Jorn, Carl-Henning Pedersen, Ejler Bille and Corneille, Klee's art after the war seems to show the way forward.
The Danish abstract artists sought, like Klee, the immediacy and spontaneity of the child's simple and powerful expression, and the discovery of children's ability to express themselves in pictures was an important source of artistic inspiration for both Klee and the Cobra painters.
The fascination with the image-creating primordial force that connects Klee to Cobra manifests itself in surprising parallels and points of contact in many works. Using comparisons and contrasts, the exhibition focuses on a number of key themes – children, acrobatics, animals, war and masks – that have characterized the works of both Klee and the Cobra artists.
