Louisiana poster with the work, Easy Dark, (2007) , by Julie Mehretu. The work was included in the exhibition that Louisiana presented with the artist in 2007, and was subsequently acquired for the museum's collection. Julie Mehretu's original and at once abstract, concrete and aesthetic style has attracted a lot of attention. She masters creating works that in their content interpret both a historical and a concrete reality.
The many layers of line and color formations in Mehretu's drawings and paintings reveal volumes of perspectives, scales and levels of information that together form a non-hierarchical, cultural geometry.
A jumble of details and patterns, gathers into wholes and creates stories about architecture, city plans, countries and places - and about the artist's own life, which is linked to places like Ethiopia, Michigan, Senegal and Rhode Island.
Julie Mehretu was born in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, in 1970 and grew up in the United States. She graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1997, and it didn't take her many years to make a name for herself on the international art scene.
