Conscious Chair 3162 from the Danish brand, Mater, was originally designed in 1958 by the world-renowned Danish furniture designer and architect, Børge Mogensen together with his colleague, Esben Klint. The chair here is made of oak and Matek, where new technology makes it possible to recycle fiber-based waste materials - here waste husks from coffee roasting - with recycled plastic, here from the fitting manufacturer, Grohe. Mater was founded in Copenhagen in 2006 and from the very beginning the ambition was to inspire a global design audience and engage people in sustainable thinking.
Mater combines sustainability and circular production with timeless design through collaboration with an external base of well-established and emerging design talent. With Conscious Chair 3162 the starting point is the design of some of the biggest figures in the industry, Børge Mogensen and Esben Klint.
Together with colleagues, Børge Mogensen created international respect for Danish furniture design. His simple and functional designs have been in demand worldwide for more than half a century.
Architect Esben Klint was the son of Kaare Klint and despite a versatile education with several of the leading architects of the day, he was very much his father's student, which is especially evident in his church furnishings and in the furniture he designed together with Børge Mogensen.
'Mater means 'mother' in Latin and founder of Mater, Henrik Marstrand, notes:
"The name is the daily reminder of our small contribution to preventing the challenges 'mother earth' faces. Design affects how we as humans live our lives; it shapes values, culture and society. Unfortunately, we are increasingly aware that the choices made during design processes often have environmental consequences. But as a manufacturer, we have the opportunity to rethink questionable practices and create ethical and sustainable design that minimizes negative social and environmental impacts."
