In the aftermath of the First World War, German society experienced some turbulent years of deep poverty and political unrest, while democracy with the Weimar Republic (1918-1933) at the same time experienced a brief flourishing, before the Nazis took power.

During this period, artists seek to capture modern everyday life and to portray the lives and work of ordinary people in a realistic and sober way, which is often cleansed of all empathy and ranges from the satirical to the razor-sharp, almost clinical.
