Arne Jacobsen – Skovshoved gas station

Exhibition poster with drawing of Skovshoved Gas Station, (1937), published in connection with the Arne Jacobsen exhibition at Louisiana in 2002, on the occasion of the world-famous architect's 100th birthday. The exhibition was a retrospective tribute to the architect and his modernist design and furniture art - here exemplified by the striking gas station at Skovshoved Harbour, north of Copenhagen.

Arne Jacobsen's gas station at Kystvejen 24 was built in 1937 in connection with the construction of the new coastal road around Tårbæk and Skovshoved.

The gas station is built in Jacobsen's well-known functionalist style and is now listed. It is particularly known for its striking round roof, which both provides shade from the sun and reflects light from the lamps on the central column and the building - in the same way as today's "up-lights".

The shape of the roof also sends a clear nod to the contours of one of Arne Jacobsen's chairs, the design classic, The Ant, which Jacobsen designed much later, in 1952.
