American Arthur Jafa (b. 1960) is one of the most important voices in contemporary art. Jafa's moving and bitingly critical works depict the disparity between the success of black American culture and the low social status of black Americans. The richly illustrated catalog published for the Louisiana exhibition gives an overview of Jafa's main works. Contains i.a. a conversation between Jacob Holdt and Arthur Jafa, an introduction to the artist by the exhibition's curator, Mathias Ussing Seeberg, as well as texts by Jared Sexton, M. Nourbese Philip and Nahum Dimitri Chandler.
Arthur Jafa actually started his career as a cinematographer. He has worked with big names such as Spike Lee and Stanley Kubrick. In recent years, he has made music videos in collaboration with a number of prominent American musicians. Among others Jay-Z, Solange Knowles and most recently Kanye West on the track Wash Us in the Blood (2020). For his artistic work, he was honored in 2019 with the art world's most prestigious prize, a Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale.
