Handmade vase in burnt clay from the renowned Danish designer, Christian Bruun. Bruun's career as a craftsman already started when, at the age of 8, he got a taste for sitting at the wheel and working with clay at a local potter's house, where he was looked after after school. The ceramics then opened the doors to workshops all over the world, from the USA, over Norway and to several countries in Asia.
Christian Bruun has a workshop under the grandstand at the old racetrack in Charlottenlund - when he is not otherwise at his workshop in Vietnam, where for a few months a year he creates his unique vases according to less environmentally harmful principles together with local artisans. Christian Bruun's works are part of the permanent collection at Designmuseum Denmark, at Clay Ceramics Museum Denmark, just as his stoneware can also be found in various galleries.
Christian Bruun has a sustainable approach to his handicraft, which goes beyond basic consideration of the climate in his production. He bases his focus on new design on traditional craft principles that give work to many hands and keep an old craft alive in the workshop in Vietnam.
For two months a year, Christian Bruun lives and works together with his talented Filipino colleagues in Vietnam, where they make next year's collection of unique jars based on Christian Bruun's ideas. Here the stoneware is fired in the traditional, old and very large wood-fired dragon ovens.
The wood burning makes the ceramics more varied and more beautiful in its expression. Therefore, it is more interesting to work on cleaning the smoke from the dragon ovens than it is to switch to electric or gas ovens. In 2019, particle filters were installed on the ovens.
Christian Bruun's work with glazes and colors has also contributed to environmentally hazardous substances and heavy metals being phased out over time from glazes and clay colors and replaced by environmentally neutral substances.
In this way, the production helps to both develop and preserve the many years of experience together with the traditions of the ancient craft. In the same way, Bruun helps ensure that a new forest is planted in the central part of Vietnam every year, as compensation for air travel and the wood used in the ovens.
