Exhibition poster with the work, Winter , (1985) by the Danish artist, Per Kirkeby (1938-2018) in connection with the exhibition with Kirkeby in Louisiana in 2008/2009. Per Kirkeby's works form one of the focal points of Louisiana's collection, and with this exhibition the museum offered a retrospective encounter with all the genres the artist has moved through.
No other Danish artist in the 20th century – perhaps with the exception of Asger Jorn – has explored the geography of art as widely and deeply as Per Kirkeby.
With his background as a trained geologist and later as a central member of the Danish artist group, Eks-skolen, Kirkeby has created an impressive body of work that covers virtually all genres: Poetry, writing, film, scenography, architecture, painting, sculpture and graphics.
The international recognition is indisputable – both in the wider art world and among artist colleagues, where Kirkeby appears in many respects today as an artist's artist.
Louisiana has previously – among other things with the exhibition of the artist's early pop art-inspired works on masonite in 2002 – exhibited Kirkeby to the Danish public, and a number of the artist's larger works are almost permanently exhibited in the museum's collection.
