Matre

Norwegian cultural heritage

Matre is a Norwegian design brand born out of a deep fascination with Norwegian cultural heritage, craftsmanship, and the design traditions that once made Norway a prominent voice in the international furniture industry. The brand was founded in 2023 by Elizabeth Matre-Aas and her husband Ole Kristian Bergsjø Aas, with the aim of rediscovering and revitalising a nearly forgotten era in Norwegian design history.

Back on the international map

Matre works to rebuild and strengthen the Norwegian furniture industry by putting Norwegian design back on the international map. They revive furniture designs from Norwegian pioneers such as Peter Opsvik (1939–2024) and Sigurd Resell (1920–2010). The selected furniture is characterized by being functional, but also beautiful in itself - as sculptural elements in the room.

Every product is created with a focus on quality, material awareness, and craftsmanship. Matre works from a holistic perspective, where consideration for nature, people, craft traditions, and the local communities connected to the brand is a natural part of the process. At the same time, the brand places great emphasis on the human values behind production — with a focus on authenticity, community, and personal development.

In addition, Matre has taken the initiative for 'Design Salon' - a vibrant meeting place for Norwegian design, industry and creativity, where they want to create new energy among Norwegian designers and in the furniture industry through collaboration and dialogue.

“Made in Norway”
Matre has been awarded the “Made in Norway” label by Innovation Norway — a mark of quality confirming that the products are manufactured in Norway and meet high standards for responsible and transparent production principles.

Tube Lounge Chair

The lounge chair, designed in 1971 by Sigurd Resell, has an ergonomic shape with a natural tilt function that follows the body's movements and ensures high comfort and long durability. Resell is particularly known for his work from the 1960s onwards, where he created furniture that combines function, comfort and a simple, timeless design.

Matre Stripes

The handmade cushions are made in Matre’s signature stripe textile – a woven fabric developed in Norway by Elizabeth Matre-Aas in collaboration with textile designer Saga Nilsson from Innvik. The textile is characterised by its rhythmic stripes and tactile depth, giving the cushions a strong visual identity. Each cushion is hand-sewn by the Norwegian social enterprise Moving Mamas, which provides women with international backgrounds with training and meaningful employment.
