Alexander Calder (1898-1976) was an American artist, best known for his invention of the kinetic sculpture he called "mobiles". Calder is also known for his "stabiles", which are stationary sculptures. He is one of the 20th century's most influential and innovative artists and contributed significantly to the development of modern sculpture.
