Alexander Calder (1898-1976) was an American artist, best known for his invention of kinetic sculpture, which he called "mobiles". Calder is also known for his "stabiles", which are stationary sculptures. He is one of the most influential and innovative artists of the 20th century and contributed significantly to the development of modern sculpture.
