___
The book shows how we Danes have looked - and just as importantly, how we have seen ourselves - from the portrait's return to art history in the Renaissance to our time in the new millennium. The book begins with a prologue of four chapters that illuminate the uniqueness of the Danish portrait, the social position of portrait painters, the resistance and hesitation of female portrait painters, and the place of the portrait in the everyday life of Danes.
