Marisol (1930–2016) stands as one of the most radical and visionary artists of her generation. She was born as María Sol Escobar in Paris to a Venezuelan family, and died in New York, where she had lived and worked for much of her life since the 1950s. Although she achieved enormous fame, particularly in the United States, and although her body of work is marked by a highly original artistic vision, there has still never been a comprehensive presentation of the artist in Europe.

Marisol broke through on the international art scene in the early 1960s and became a central and highly successful figure in the New York art world. There, she became close friends with Andy Warhol, who in the early stages of his career was both influenced by and fascinated with her work.

Marisol developed a distinctive voice within Pop Art through her painted and carved wooden sculptures of near life-sized figures. These were often combined with found objects in large-scale tableaux, blending Pop Art with folk art traditions. Her work contains references to early cultures in Central and South America, as well as to the rapidly emerging American consumer culture and the cult of celebrity. She also repeatedly used self-portraiture as a central motif.
