Guston's work is about the simple conditions of life. His universe seems in tune with the background it has in his not too life-affirming biography – his Jewish background does not deny itself. But Gaston's painterly energy and his artistic power are great, and the pictures trump the melancholy with their energetic display of color and his distinctive figurative style.

It is at the end of the 60s that Guston radically transforms his artistic language from the more abstract signs of the hand to the introduction of objects. Everything Guston draws and paints in the last ten years of his life is his life, produced through the accumulation of objects.

Irons, brushes, watches, cigars, books – everything that the studio floated with finds its way into the picture room and forms the private constellation that reproduces Guston's days, weeks, months, years.

Philip Guston's merit was that he maintained this relationship with the reality of the immediate things and transformed it into a pictorial world of great human strength.
