___
The abstract and figurative merge in Alechinsky's paintings and prints, where he mixes colorful paintings with black and white ink drawings. After training as a book illustrator and typographer, Pierre Alechinsky joined the international artists' association Cobra in 1949.
Here he met one of the association's three founders, the Danish artist (1914-1973) Asger Jorn, with whom Alechinsky had a close friendship until Jorn's death, which resulted in a long-standing and fruitful artistic collaboration between the two.
The Cobra movement was based on freedom, imagination and spontaneity. In their practice, the artists tried to reach the unconscious and emotions in humans. Therefore, they painted abstract, spontaneous and expressive paintings, where they let imagination and emotions run free.
