The Last of the First - Portraits of Ten Female Artists Born 1925-1946

There is currently a great deal of attention being paid to a generation of Danish female artists who for many years went under the radar. They were born between 1925 and 1946, and they became artists on a scene that had not made room for them in advance. In her book, art critic Maria Kjær Themsen portrays ten prominent artists, each of whom has left their mark on various artistic fields. Together, they cover a wide range – from weaving, painting, and performance art to sculpture, film, ceramics, and photography.

What they all have in common, however, is the experience of having to create a place for themselves in a world where recognition did not come naturally. They have faced resistance along the way, but have also shown remarkable strength and perseverance. For the first time, the book provides a comprehensive insight into their stories, told from the artists' own perspectives.
