The book Feminism, Pedagogy and the Studio - Reflections Across Four Decades collects two lectures by the feminist art historian and curator Griselda Pollock, held in 1985 and 2022 respectively.
In the first lecture from 1985, Pollock examines the gender politics of 20th-century art education and challenges the traditional notion of the male artistic genius. She points out how art history has overlooked women's significant participation in modern art and argues for a broader and more inclusive historiography.
Almost forty years later, Pollock returns to some of the same questions, but with her gaze directed towards a completely different contemporary context. She examines how digital development and social media have changed our way of thinking, communicating, and relating to ideas. With the concept of "insta-grammatology," she highlights how the logic of social media can narrow nuanced thinking and affect political exchange.
The book provides a thought-provoking insight into four decades of feminist art history and shows how questions of art, gender, power, and thought continue to be relevant – albeit in new forms.
