Hubbuch's portrait was originally quadruple, but Hubbuch cut it in half after the canvas was damaged in the middle. Thus the work ended up in two double portraits, with four different depictions of Hubbuch's wife.

The artistic direction of the period - Neue Sachlichkeit - the new matter-of-factness or objectivity - included artists who depicted less personality, but more types, defined by social class and work. Like most artists in the Neue Sachlichkeit, Hubbuch was also preoccupied with everyday scenes and with reproducing objects and patterns in minute detail.

The portrait as a genre was changed radically - from a psychological depiction to a cool observation of external characteristics.
