In KVINDER FREM! – In Pursuit of Women in Danish Visual Art Through 50 Years, Birgitte Ellemann Höegh explores why female artists have not been treated equally with their male colleagues in an art world that otherwise readily views itself as progressive. Starting with the groundbreaking 'Women's Exhibition XX' at Charlottenborg in 1975, the book follows the ideas and actions of professionals and artists throughout the art world to the present day, when women are finally being truly written into art history.
The narrative is driven by three prominent visual artists: Ursula Reuter Christiansen, Kirsten Justesen and Lene Adler Petersen. They were all involved in 1975 and have since insisted on women's own gaze, experiences and place in art.
Through their and others' stories, the book depicts five decades of ups and downs on the Danish art scene: from the feminist breakthrough of the 1970s to 2019, when it is revealed that only 2 percent of the works sold at auctions in the Western world are created by women – and up to 2025, when the exhibition celebrates its 50th anniversary.
