Louisiana Review - Remedios Varo (English)

Louisiana review in English published in connection with the exhibition of the surrealist, Spanish-Mexican painter Remedios Varo (1908-1963) which will be held from September 2026 to January 2027.

Remedios Varo, who declared that "the dream world and the real world are the same," attempted, in an almost alchemical manner, to combine widely different techniques, fantasies, and ideas in her paintings, which have an enigmatic, cinematic character and often incorporate hybrid creatures.

She utilized surrealism's chance-based processes but was simultaneously incredibly precise, meticulous, and classical in her painterly expression and in her use of color, which has clear references to Italian painting from the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance.
