Louisiana Postcard featuring a motif from Remedios Varo's work Woman leaving the psychoanalyst's office, 1960, published in connection with the exhibition of the surrealist, Spanish-Mexican painter Remedios Varo (Sept. 18). As one of the 20th century's most visionary artists, Varo's distinctive imagery combines the dreamlike, the intellectual, and the spiritual in works that still speak with great power to our contemporary world.
There is also a clear feminist dimension in Varo's surrealist visual language. Her female figures, often bearing her own features, are active creators – explorers, alchemists, and researchers. They challenge traditional notions of women's place in the world and instead point towards a unique female spirituality and intellectual self-determination.
