Louisiana Postcard featuring a motif from Remedios Varo's work "Exploration of the Orinoco River's Source," 1959, published in connection with the exhibition of the surrealist Spanish-Mexican painter Remedios Varo (Sept. 18). As one of the 20th century's most visionary artists, Varo's distinctive visual world combines the dreamlike, the intellectual, and the spiritual in works that still speak with great power to our contemporary age.
There is also a clear feminist dimension in Varo's surrealist imagery. Her female figures, often bearing her own features, are active creators – explorers, alchemists, and researchers. They challenge traditional notions of women's place in the world and instead point towards a particular female spirituality and intellectual self-determination.
