Anti-Reflective framing of the work, Pop, (2021), by American artist Shara Hughes (b. 1981). The poster comes framed with a matte laminated surface, which significantly reduces reflections from light sources compared to regular glass and provides a beautiful, calm visual expression without glare. The frame is made of oak veneer.
Shara Hughes uses a wealth of techniques and masterfully references art history in her vibrant paintings, and is especially renowned for her invented landscapes.
The work Pop was created as a series of large-format paintings. Hughes has let various flowers play a leading role, and here, poppies, which fill the foreground of the canvas and complicate the view of the landscape element that seems to lie behind.
The title of the work elegantly plays with the English word for poppy – and then 'pop', which is both popular culture and an art movement that celebrated precisely this culture. But pop is also the sound of something bursting open. And then we are back to the budding, the poppies springing up here and there and finally covering the canvas. Pop, pop.
In 2019, Shara Hughes was interviewed by Louisiana Channel in her studio in Brooklyn, New York. In the interview, she discussed drawing inspiration from other painters and why she feels that a good painting is about "going to the edge and not giving all the answers." Watch the interview here.
