Roger Ballen - Spirits and Spaces
Choose options
In the photobook Spirits and Spaces, the American-South African photographer Roger Ballen explores a claustrophobic and staged environment where animals, drawings, and fragmented human figures are part of chaotic and dreamlike scenarios. The images revolve around themes such as isolation, absurdity, and the shadow sides of humanity, marking a further development of his characteristic visual style.
Although Ballen had not previously shown interest in color photography, he was inspired to work with the medium after receiving a Leica SL camera as a gift in 2016. By opening himself to the potential of color, he began using light in new and creative ways, exploring new experimental directions.
Roger Ballen is a photographer known for his dark, surreal pictorial universe, where the absurd, psychological, and theatrical play a central role.
