In this first comprehensive presentation of the spread and development of the art museum in Denmark in the 20th and 21st centuries, Kristian Handberg tells the story of the modern art museum. Where were the first museums located, and how did this new arrangement reach Denmark in the 19th century? What was the significance of the great world exhibitions and ideas about education as social reform? And how did the cultural centers of the welfare society lead to the contemporary art museum in the 21st century?
Kristian Handberg is a PhD and assistant professor in art history at the University of Copenhagen. His research focuses on exhibitions during the Cold War period between 1955 and 1985.
