Louisiana poster featuring the work, Page , (2017), by South African artist, William Kentridge, (b. 1955). The poster was published in connection with Louisiana's exhibition of Kentridge in 2017 with drawings, films and installations – including the installation, The Refusal of Time, (2012), which is part of the museum's collection.
Just over 25 years ago, Kentridge made a name for himself as an animator with his short animated films that dealt with his homeland's problematic apartheid history. Using a characteristic stop-motion technique based on his charcoal drawings, which are still his characteristics, he brings his drawings to life for the viewer's eyes, so that we can follow how the drawing is created.
Louisiana's exhibition in 2017 focused on a number of the artist's late works from the period 2003-2016, which in their anatomy mark a new break in Kentridge's oeuvre. A lifelong enthusiasm for theatre, opera, literature, film and music has culminated over the last 15 years in a series of virtuosic installations, where the aforementioned art forms are connected through moving images, words, music and scenography. The scene is set, so to speak.
At the heart of Kentridge's work is man: the colonized, regulated, oppressed, fugitive or dreaming man. With great humour, empathy and poetry, the works depict how humans navigate the world and how we are strongly influenced by and subject to mapping, concepts of time and ideology.
